Suffering From Sciatica or Not Sure What It Is?
What Exactly is Sciatica—and What can you do about it?
At Wignall-Kennedy Chiropractic, we regularly see patients dealing with sciatic pain—especially during active seasons when people in Brookfield, Wauwatosa, and the greater Milwaukee area are spending more time golfing, playing tennis, or staying active outdoors.
The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, both in length and diameter. It begins in the lower spine, travels through the pelvis and gluteal region, and runs down the back of the leg before branching into the foot. It actually originates from five different nerve roots, making it a complex and important part of the body.
True sciatica refers to pain caused by irritation of this nerve. This irritation can come from several sources, including:
Lumbar disc issues
Sacroiliac joint dysfunction
Muscle strain or ligament injury
Sports that involve repetitive rotation—like golf, tennis, or softball—can often contribute to sciatic pain.
It’s important to note that “sciatica” is sometimes used broadly to describe leg pain, but not all leg pain is true sciatic nerve irritation. In most cases, sciatica involves pain that starts in the lower back or glute and travels down the leg, sometimes accompanied by:
Numbness or tingling
Weakness
Reduced reflexes in the leg, ankle, or foot
What Should You Do Next?
If you’re experiencing these symptoms, the most important step is getting an accurate diagnosis. Understanding the root cause of your pain is key to choosing the right treatment.
If you’re dealing with sciatic pain in Brookfield or Wauwatosa, chiropractic care can help identify the source of the issue and create a plan to relieve pain and restore movement.
